STAR Accomplishments

  • Canvassed neighborhoods, created grassroots yard sign/pins/t-shirt fundraising and developed bilingual educational materials
  • Reached out to inform residents via social media, phone banking, word of mouth, one-click emails and door-to-door outreach
  • Developed strong partnerships with local environmental justice organizations and elected officials
  • Organized hundreds of local residents and participated in town halls, community forums, local events, public hearings
  • and state legislative outreach
  • Hosted weekly leadership meetings, created a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and continued grant writing and fundraising efforts
  • Compiled research put together from 3 nationally known experts to support our concerns, identified impacted communities and created key data points to educate policymakers and the public.

  • Coordinated commitment of Cherry Creek School District NOT to lease mineral rights for fracking under local schools
  • Participated in Arapahoe County’s Oil & Gas Open House
  • Prompted Colorado Energy and Carbon Management Commission to hold first-ever preliminary public-comment period 
  • Convinced Arapahoe County to remove Cryptocurrency Mining from changes to oil and gas regulations
  • Secured support of U.S. Congressman Jason Crow who issued a Press Release and contacted the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency with our concerns
  • Activated U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to support our efforts to protect the Aurora Reservoir from fracking
  • Obtained confirmation from U.S. Bureau of Land Management that mineral rights for Lowry Superfund site will NOT be leased for fracking under Superfund site
  • Created relationships with local wildlife habitat groups to learn about the endangered wildlife in our area
  • Organized an online Anniversary Fundraiser which raised over $10,000 in support
  • Launched an online merchandise store for STAR apparel
  • Attended the Civitas Open House located at the Aurora Community College
  • A culmination of one year of grassroots advocacy resulted in a 3,000 ft. blanket setback from occupied structures from the Board of County Commissioners of Arapahoe County.  This being the largest setback in the state and the most protected standards, there is still so much more work to be done by impacted residents and environmental justice groups.
  • Filing an Affected Party Status for the Lowry Ranch CAP. 
    STAR being the first ever organization to contest a CAP in the state of Colorado as well as requesting a Local Public Hearing from the ECMC!
  • Submitted Phase 2b redline rules to County & public comments on all O&G applications
  • Created Membership forms for our STAR members to inform us which activities they enjoy at the Aurora Reservoir and for them to commit to protect the reservoir, area around the reservoir, wetlands, open space, wildlife, air, densely populated communities and peaceful environment from the pollution and environmental damage caused by oil and gas drilling. 
  • Participated in a variety of local HOA meetings and Metro District meetings in the impacted areas.
